(OOC: Poughkeepsie is the town where I live, 80 miles north of NYC, I just had to add it to the map for my games)
NEW YORK ITEMS ENTERTAINMENT SECTION
Silvertongue Licks The Rest In Delicate Linen
Poughkeepsie Band Takes Battle In New York Ska Gig
Every town and city produces occassional outstanding musicians and other artists, and it was my pleasure to witness the newest Ska band to come out of Poughkeepsie in the Mid Hudson Valley. Silvertongue, a five-member all-girl band played in the Battle of the Bands at The Delicate Linen on 5th and Main on the 2nd of September and shocked the crowd with their performance. It wasn't just the exuberance of their performance that was surprising however, but the strange mix of musical styles that makes the band what it is. Although headlined as a Ska band only the bass player, Shivaun "Silvertongue" Tong, is truly a Ska musician. The drummer, Marsha "Thrash" Myers, and lead guitar, Carly "The Ax" Slayer, show their punk origins in the power and chaos they bring to the stage. Vicky "Hudson" Hartmann croons with a seductive country melody and Denise "Double-D" Dunmore rounds off the quintet with a blues sax. Such diverse musicians should not be able to work together, yet somehow they produce a sound that is as enticing as it is unique.
"Silvertongue" Tong, who is also the bands lyricist, describes their music as "Urban Sound" stating "Good music's always been about creativity and innovation sending an important and powerful message."
The songs they played drip with thought-provoking lyrics. From "Hudson Soup" an environmental conservation song about the pollution of the Hudson River to the weight-conscious "Proud (Double-D All Over)" they touch on topics important to the world and meaningful to most of us. That said, the band also had its playful songs such as "The Woman With The Silver Tongue" - a play on the James Bond movie theme "The Man With The Golden Gun". The band seems able to incorporate the range from political activism to zany humor and passionate love ballads.
Truly this is one of the most unique and varied bands I have had the pleasure to see in a long time. Yet from what I saw backstage there are already tensions between band members. The search for a manager took a toll on the girls and they are still looking to start touring. They could be a new power on the music scene, but only if they can continue to weave their different styles as well as they did in the Battle of the Bands. Creative differences will either be the success or the destruction of this quintet. |

Hey Hawk, I might sound like a whiner but given you were the first person to suggest we do these RPs where's yours? |

I love it! The noise group I am in did a little tour a few year ago, and we played at a place near Pough (spelling), for real! BTW, it's www.8bitporno.com _________________ Todd M. Gillissie

Glad you both like it. Hawke, I think your RP puts us all to shame! Gilli (Sorry, I forget if it's Josh or Todd - senility is a terrible thing in one this young), it's spelled Poughkeepsie. As one of my old professors said "It's name is half Native American, half Dutch, and half made up!"
Anyhoo, I was gonna carry on doing New York Items reports and interviews on the girls' careers but something seems to be amiss with this particular game. Although I've won battles, got a 24 manager who's set me up in gigs up to 500 miles outside NYC so I get known, for some reason when I ask him to book me a tour he books a 2 gig tour (even when I gave him a month-and-a-half tour span) and when I ask him to seek out recording contracts he just goes silent. I'm now into March 2001 and he's been like this for 5 months. I'll give him another couple of months (game time) to sort his act out before I reroll.
Hmm: Just a quick update on the touring problem. I now have a multi-date tour. I changed the starting city from Poughkeepsie to New York and so the game changed who I was touring with. I guess the first band wasn't touring themselves... but as they're not the only band I had a relationship with in Poughkeepsie it's a shame the game couldn't set me up to tour with someone else. Given you cannot select who to tour with, Gilli, it might be something to consider for SOGRS 2 or an update. |
